So many things I could share about what a Blessing it has been to be born in and a citizen of the USA. The Blessing of our country, despite what history revisionists would say, is primarily attributed to the Godly men and women who founded our country and set into place Biblical principles and their/our CHRISTIAN Faith. We all should be so thankful.
But today I will want to express my appreciation for all the Veterans who have served our country. We are a great nation because of their sacrifice. Indeed some gave some and some gave their all. I will share a few closest to me.
My father, George N. Andrews, an immigrant from Greece as a young boy became a US citizen and soon enlisted in the US Army becoming a S/SGT with the 101st Airborne serving in Europe in WW2. While in combat he was awarded a Purple Heart for wound suffered. He returned, started our family, maintained a business in Aurora for over 50 years, helped establish a Greek Orthodox church, was President of Aurora Boys Baseball and served voluntarily several other community endeavors as well.
My Father’s younger brother Peter, also came to the USA as a young boy, became a citizen and soon volunteered in the Marine Corps to serve his new country during WW2.
He was unfortunately Killed in Action on the Island of Saipan. He was awarded one of the Military’s highest honors. The Silver Star, for Valor and Gallantry in action. I am so honored to have been named after him and look forward to meeting him in Heaven.
My wife Kathy’s father, William “Bill” Bennett, born and raised in Aurora, also volunteered in the Marine Corps during WW2. In fact a Book titled “Once Upon a Lifetime” by Brent Peterson chronicles his experience growing up in Aurora and goes into extraordinary detail of his combat experience while in the Pacific Islands.
These 3 men are merely representative of countless other men and women who have fought for our country’s freedom so we can remain free.
There is a plaque on the WW2 monument in Springfield Illinois that reads -
“IT IS FOOLISH AND WRONG TO MOURN THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO DIED,
RATHER WE SHOULD THANK GOD THAT SUCH MEN AND WOMEN LIVED.”
Yes, on the Celebration of our Country’s 250th Birthday, I trust we will all take time to THANK our Veterans, Founding Fathers and Leaders for providing us the freedom and opportunities that we enjoy like no other country in the world.
Finally, many of us would say “May God Continue to Bless America” and it is my prayer that we also take time to bless, worship and honor the one and only true God of the Bible so that we may be worthy of such a Blessing.
